OVERCOMING THE ODDS
In the streets of Koppal, my childhood was marked by struggles and uncertainties as my father abandoned our family. I walked 3 kilometres every day to attend a government school, carrying my books in a simple carry bag. Despite my best efforts I could not focus on my studies due to lack of basic necessities. My mother was left to bear the heavy burden of raising the family alone. As a daily wage worker on farms, she often struggled to provide us with even one meal a day. Everything changed when I joined the Sri Sathya Sai Loka Seva Gurukulam in Grade 6. Initially, I struggled to cope with academics, but the NIOS system proved to be a true blessing for students like me who lacked a strong academic foundation. It allowed me to study at my own pace, making it easier to grasp difficult concepts and helped bridge the gaps in my previous education.
For the first time, I could focus on my studies without worrying about burdening my family. Beyond academics, the institution nurtured my talents and passions. I discovered my love for painting and developed my skills in sports, especially football. Here, all my needs are taken care of - food, accommodation, books, uniforms, shoes, and all other personal essentials are provided totally free-of-charge, ensuring a comfortable stay at the hostel. I enjoy learning economics the most, and I am inspired to pursue higher education in this field.
